An engineer, Engr. Clement Ucho, MNSE has posited that there is the need for engineers to be certified.

He made the statement in Abuja in a chat with news men when he was honoured as the MAN OF THE MOMENT by Community Award Group.

Dr Clement Ucho who is the managing director of MCUCHO Nigeria limited, explained the benefits an engineer being certified by the bodies in charge of regulating the practice of engineering in Nigeria stands to enjoy.

He explained that certified engineers can have both internal and external recognition which will enhance his rating as an engineer. On the other hand, he said that certification of engineers will help to eradicate quacks from the profession.

There are two major organizations that certify and regulate the practice of engineers. One is of the Nigeria Society Engineers (NSE). NSE is responsible for maintenance and improvement of ethics in engineering practice.

The other body is Council for the regulation of Engineering (COREN). It is in charge of certification of persons for the purpose of practicing engineering in the country.

On why some engineers have refused to be certified, Dr. Ucho said that many of them are ignorant of the duties of these regulatory bodies. And that some are too busy with work and do not have much time to identify with any of the regulatory bodies.

Dr. Ucho therefore advised that qualified engineers should find time to join the regulatory bodies as it will go a long way in improving their status as engineers and in sanitizing the sector

Dr. Ucho thanked the group for recognizing his little contribution to the development of his people.
