The chairman of Accord Party and former chairman of IPAC, Alhaji Muhammad Lawal Nalado has said that the Independent National electoral Commission should conduct credible elections in the forthcoming off season elections in the country.
He made the statement during a chat with newsmen in his office in Abuja.
He pointed out that there is no election without violence but maintains that government and INEC are working hard to look at the loopholes and find ways of improving on what they have done in the past.
Alhaji Nalado says it is people that want to make it by all means are causing problems for the country. He also says that those that commit crimes end up using the money in beer parlour and carrying harlots. “You can’t see serious minded people committing crime”, he added.
He believes that such electoral problems are associated with financial problems. He noted that people who don’t have work indulge in electoral crimes.
On why political parties don’t adhere to their manifestos, he says that the IPAC has no power to make political parties adhere to their manifestos but says that political parties follow their manifestos as as much as possible.
On the suggestion for INEC to deregister some political parties, he says that INEC has no powers to deregister political parties. He explains that if any association makes request to INEC to be registered as political party, if INEC does not respond in about 30days, the association will go and open office and begin to act as political party.
He proffers a solution to this. He says if the INEC should be allowed to conduct elections at all levels that some parties can on their own concentrate in participating in only local elections.
He says that government funding of parties used to offset such bills like office accommodation, staff emolument etc.
He believes that if a political party has no money to run its affairs it will be an opportunity for money bags to hijack such party.
