The Green Party of Nigeria (GPN) held its compulsory National
Working Committee, (NWC) meeting in preparation for the forthcoming 2019 general elections. As it is mandatory Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) was represented, as deliberations were going on.
The National Chairman of the party, Chief Sam Eke, PhD gave a brief welcome address before deliberations started. Chief Eke noted that the meeting is crucial to the party and he puts it thus: “The meeting is very crucial because of the fort coming general elections in 2019 which is fast approaching…”
He stated that it is a well-known fact that the GNP is in alliance with over forty political parties and that the group is called Coalition of United Political Parties, (CUPP). The objective of the group according to him is to produce a simple presidential candidate in order to win and form government of national unity with the parties involved. He explained that the association is not a merger and that the parties will be free to produce their candidates for Governorship, Senate, House of Representative and State assembly members.
Chief Eke stated that his party is against the continuous waste of human lives, human rights abuse, rapid decay of infrastructure, harassment of opposition under the pretense of fighting corruption and total destruction of what he called pillars and tents of democracy.
In a very sad note, the party chairman decried the vote buying in all the elections conducted recently, especially in Bauchi State where the party’s candidate, the former governor of the state, Mallam Isa Yuguda was rigged out through vote buying.
He informed the general public that the party’s constitution has no provision for the post of coordinator and national leader. Also, he stated that change of name from Citizen Popular Party of Nigeria
(CPPN) to Green Party of Nigeria (GPN) does not mean change of position in leadership positions in the party. “Our party structures remain the same until we conduct state congress, national convention or on appointment basis by recognized GPN structure”, he emphasized.
He used the avenue to state that well-meaning Nigerians are welcomed to the party. He then implored members of the party to be law abiding and work for the party.
At the end of the meeting the committee was able to resolve all issues deliberated on. The meeting was chaired by the National Chairman, Chief Sam Eke, PhD. A few members of the executive were absent at the meeting.
Some of the attendees are: Adebesin Bosede, National Treasurer; Hajara Ishaku, National Women Leader; Onyeke Emmanuel Ojile, National Publicity Secretary; Kingsley Ogbaoso, National/Creative/Social Media Coordinator; and Azuka Ezebuchi, National Organizing Secretary.
