As part of its campaign for better children’s welfare; National
Council of Child Rights Advocates of Nigeria (NACCRAN), FCT Chapter
has hosted over 100 orphans and vulnerable children in the Federal
Capital Territory, FCT for a Christmas party.
The party that took place at Jabi Lake Park had children from various
orphanage homes in the FCT in attendance. According to the FCT
Coordinator of NACCRAN, Mrs. Margaret Udoh, the event was to celebrate
orphans and the vulnerable children who have been deprived of benefits
enjoyed by other children whose parents are available. She stated that
NACCRAN has been organizing the party to this set of people since 2010
and hoped to improve and sustain the gesture.
Mrs. Udoh decried discrimination mated on children stressing the need
to implement and domesticate Child’s Rights Act in the remaining14
states of the Federation. She urged the orphanages to be decongested
through adoption of the children saying, “We have older children in
the orphanages due to lack of proper domestication of Adoption laws.
Children should not be left in the orphanages for so long as it is the
current situation in the country for orphans.”
Meanwhile, President, Twins and I Child Care Foundation, Hajiya Aisha
Tokura told our correspondent that the party was made possible as a
result of donations from an engineer who does not want his name
mentioned, friends as well as other well-meaning Nigerians, including
some committed NACCRAN FCT members who taxed themselves with some
levies.
She stated that she was delighted by the smiles on the faces of the
children as a result of the party.
An eight year old David Yakubu from Victorian Home, Gwarimpa
expressing his joy said, “This is the first time I am attending a
party” The primary five pupil of Holy Cross Nursery/Primary School,
Gwarimpa thanked the organizers for eliminating discrepancies on
children, appreciating the gifts and activities at the party.
Highlights of the event showcased talented performances from the
orphans in singing, dancing and other activities. Food, drinks and
party packs were distributed to the orphans as well as blankets,
mattresses, bags of rice and other home items also donated to some
orphanage homes affiliated to NACCRAN FCT.
