One of the foremost grassroots football development outfits in Abuja, Kenax Promotion has organized U17 Football Tournament for boys in Jikwoyi-Karu-Mararaba axis under the leadership of Kenny Daniel Owojori.
The event which started on 10th August, 2015 is the maiden edition of the U17 tournament by Kenax Promotion. The tournament which will last for ten days registered twelve teams to compete for trophies.
The event is majorly sponsored by A. M. U. Global Motors. The tournament jerseys and the trophies were provided by the sponsors. The first team will go home with giant trophy, medals and set of jerseys. The runner up team will also go home with a trophy, medals and set of bibs. The trophies are for keeps by the winning teams.
The General Coordinator of Kenax Promotion told our reporter that the criteria used in screening teams was a sort of rule of the thumb; ages of the players were guessed based on their birth and school certificates. He argued that even the MRI used by FIFA sometimes fails to give the accurate age of the players. Coach Kenny Daniel who was baffled by the way some coaches encouraged age cheating disqualified one of the teams on that ground.
Kenax Promotions have been promoting U15 Tournaments and has achieved some level of success. Two players that participated in the last edition of the tournament are now in the national Under15 Team.
Coach Kenny Daniel Owojori is of the opinion that grassroots age tournaments are the places where national team coaches can get real under 15, 17, 19 1and 21 players.
On how the outfit cares for players under it, Coach Kenny said the organization has some personnel who attend to their injured players.
The kind-hearted coach advises the players, and generally the youths to be disciplined on and off the field of play. He tells them to stop womanizing and detest criminality. He also posited that coaches can begin to enhance their production after participating in the tournament.
Another grassroots coach, Coach Johnson was at the event to lend a helping hand to Coach Kenny Daniel Owojori towards having a successful tournament. He disclosed that the greatest challenge facing grassroots football managers is finance. He therefore appealed on wealthy individuals and multinational organizations to support them in football development generally.
