The Director General of Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO), Dr. Mrs. Gloria N. Elemo has revealed that FIIRO is key to the transformation agenda of the country. She argued that technology is the bedrock of development in every economy because every sector of human life is driven by technology. To buttress her point, she said that FIIRO is capable of creating 30,000 jobs annually.
FIIRO was established over 58yrs ago and has 250 research results ready for commercialization. She said the institute is technology provider for all sectors of the economy. Her organization has trained over 6,000 entrepreneurs and she believes that if 30% of them are able to set up industries, the country will transform technologically in a very short time.
Dr. Elemo decried the attitude of Nigerian business people who prefer commerce to real sector engagement. “Because the population is there everybody wants go into buying and selling, thereby developing other peoples’ economy”, she said.
FIIRO was at this year’s ministerial briefing of Ministry of Science and Technology. FIIRO is one of the agencies under the ministry. The briefing is the review of activities of organizations under the ministry in the past twelve months.
The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Abdu Bulama and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Winifred Ita-Oyo led directors in the ministry to brief the public on the score card of the ministry. The event was hosted by the Ministry of Information led by the Supervising Minister of Information, Dr. Nurudeen Muhammad.
