Starwood Hotels have instituted a corporate social responsibility (CSR) program called Community Cares. The exercise is the group’s way of giving back to their host communities worldwide. Today’s program is performed simultaneously by over 1,000 Starwood hotels globally. Starwood group has five hotels in Nigeria; Sheraton Hotel and Towers Abuja, Le Méridien Ibom Hotel & Golf Resort Uyo, Four Points by Sheraton Lagos, Le Méridien Ogeyi Place Port Harcourt, and Sheraton Hotel Lagos.

The Public Relations Manager of Starwood group in Nigeria, Nanji Laura Tyem spoke to our correspondent during the exercise. According to her each property of the group is at liberty to choose a duty it will perform at the event. “Some are planting trees, some are helping children in the hospital, some are donating things while some are cleaning the communities and helping people”, she said. She told our reporter that Abuja Sheraton Hotel and Towers are involved in helping to clean the streets of Abuja, and in conjunction with FRSC to control traffic.

On regularity of the exercise, Tyem said it depends on individual property of the group; “Some people might do it monthly, quarterly – it depends on time for each property”, she added. She explained that all Starwood hotels are Five Stars.
