Linus Aleke, Abuja:
Ahead of the commencement of the Eagle Nest Cultural Heritage TV Reality Show 2014 which is bid to heat the nation’s air wave in October, the Minister of Tourism Culture and National Orientation High Chief Edem Duke will be leading federal government delegation to perform the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of novelty cultural village.
Addressing newsmen on the level of preparedness for the groundbreaking ceremony coming up soon, the national coordinator of the group Chief Christian Ekolibor noted that the novelty cultural village will house the contestant during the cultural TV reality show, adding that it is the first of its kind in black Africa.
He added that the TV reality show will present a credible alternative to fans of big brother Africa with rich local content and cultural extravaganza which will promote the nation’s diverse cultural heritage as well as create employment.
He cautions Africans to beware of media content that is antithetical to their culture. He said that time has come for Africans to take their destinies in their own hand by supporting and promoting African heritage, saying that Africans should resist the superimposition of western culture on Africans through Eurocentric media contents which scholars had described as media and cultural imperialism.
According to him, “Preparation for the groundbreaking is already at advanced stage. It gives me joy to be part of this historic event aimed at reviving and reinvigorating the ailing rich cultural heritage of our divergent ethnic nationalities that make up Nigeria. Researches had shown that our cultural heritage is at the verge of extinction hence the urgent step to revive it becomes imperative. We understand that government alone cannot salvage the situation and is why we are collaborating with ministry of Tourism to ensure that we revive the nation’s good and most cherished culture amongst the youngsters who are the future of our nation. The novelty cultural village which is been constructed in Kuje area council will showcase the nation’s architectural design with locally sourced materials from start to finish. The novelty village which will depict African rural setting will also house the contestants throughout the period of the show, create employment for the teeming youths and reduce crime. The serene natural environment of Kuje area council together with its proximity to Abuja International Airport is the few out of numerous reasons why Kuje was chosen to host the cultural extravaganza. The project will put Nigeria in the culture and tourism map of the world.”
He added that Tourism if properly harnessed will contribute in no small measure to the socio-economic development and well being of the nation, saying that countries like Brazil, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago and Kenya have leveraged on Tourism.
Ekolibor commended Minister of Tourism Chief Edem Duke for buying into the project, describing him as a man with unquenchable thirst for tourism development and cultural revival in Africa.
The event according to him will draw participants from the 36 states of the federation including FCT.
