NIOB holds 2014 Technical Training/AGM

The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), FCT- Abuja Chapter, holds her two day Technical Training/Annual General Meeting (AGM) between 9th and 10th April, 2014. The AGM will elect new officers after the mandatory training for members of the institute. NIOB gained autonomy from Chartered Institute of Building, United Kingdom in 1970 and gained its statutory backing of the profession by obtaining the Builders’ (Registration) Decree No. 45 of 1989 from the Federal Government of Nigeria. NIOB has over members made up of fellows, Corporate, Graduates, Affiliates, Associates, Licentiates, and technicians’ grades.
NIOB has chapters in most states of the federation including the FCT chapter. The two day event with the theme, “Building Consultancy Services: An approach for Effective Project Delivery” will feature lectures by eminent members of the institute before election of new officers to take over from the outgoing ones.
Two papers were delivered on day one of the event. The first was by Bldr. (Dr.) D. D. Jambol, which he titled; Buildability and Maintainability Analysis: The Key to Project Implementation. In the well-researched Dr. Jambol discussed the following topics, The meaning of buildability and maintainability analysis(BMA) is; The importance of BMA to a construction project; How to prepare a BMA project; Steps to preparing BMA projects among other topics. The second paper by Bldr. Balonwu Christopher titled, Recourse Management for Effective Project Delivery: The five “Ms” of every Construction Project. He listed the five Ms as follows, Management, Money, Materials, Man-power and Machines.
The second day of the event seems to be busier as the concluding part of the training will take place before the election of new officers. Bldr. Prof. Akin Akindoyin presented the first paper with the title, The Concept and Practice of Building Consultancy Services for Professional Builders. He discussed these topics; The Concept of building Consultancy Services (BCS); The Different Areas where Builders can Practice as consultants etc. The training session came to an end after the paper presented by Bldr. Prof. Y. Z. Izam. The title is, A General Overview of the Use of Builders Documents for day to Day Project Delivery. He expatiated on the following topics; Quality Management Plan; Health and Safety Management Plan, etc.
The outgoing Chairman of FCT chapter of the institute Bldr. Musa Yakubu told our reporter that the institute is making effort to sensitize the public of the need to engage services of certified builders to eliminate the activities of quacks. He also enjoined members of the institute to always endeavor to partake in the mandatory trainings programs of the institute.
