Achebe was extraordinary among his contemporaries-Prof. Uwazurike

A house of representative member, representing; Ehime-Mbano, Obowo and Ihitte-Uboma Federal Constituency, Hon. (Prof) Chidi R. Uwazurike made the assertion that Late Prof. Chinue Achebe was extraordinary in the literary world among his contemporaries. He said this at the 50th National Anniversary Celebrations of one of Late Achebe’s books- “Arrow of God”, in Abuja. The theme of the nationwide event is, “Literature, leadership and National Unity”, and will take place in 8cities across the nation: Ibadan, Otuoke, Abuja, Lagos, Awka, Ogidi (Late Achebe’s home town), Port-Harcourt and Sokoto, between March 21 and April 28, 2014.
Prof. Uwazurike, who chaired the Abuja event told newsmen that ANA(Association of Nigerian Authors) organized the anniversary because of wide acceptance the book across the globe. The book will be celebrated in over 70 countries this year. Answering question on if there were people like the late literary icon in Nigeria, Hon. Uwazurike said there were people that made Nigerian literary scene vibrant during Late Achebe’s days; people like Flora Nwapa, Obi Egbuna, John Munonye, Wole Soyinka etc. “The only different in that Chinua was extraordinary”, he said.
Hon. Prof. Chidi R. Uwazurike is an alumnus of University of Nigeria (UNN), and a member of ANA. He ie a novelist/playwright. His best literary work, “Yesterday was Silent” was published in America in 1994. According to him renowned actor, Pete Edochie was among those the featured in live stage of one of his books- “Fire the Goddess” in 1974. He revealed that Ibrahim Tahir was a great writer but he is a sociologist like him.
The Abuja event featured poetic performance, drama sketches, quiz and dancing competition. The following schools participated in quiz completion: Ragina Pacis, GSS Tudu Wada, MSS Maitama, GSS Garki.
The final stage of the month long celebration will take place in Sokoto, North West Nigeria. It will take place in Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto. It will be chaired by His Excellency, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, KBE, the Sarduanan Sakkwato on Monday 28th April 2014.
