By Kennedy Dimaku, Abuja:
Abuja Painted Taxi Association has appealed to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed to rescind the restriction of Abuja Painted Taxis in FCT to operate in certain areas; public establishment as well as hotels in Abuja.
Chairman of the Association, Comrade Shehu Shugaba Yaradua who made this appeal in his good well message at the flag of phase II, FCT SURE –P/AICL Abuja Taxi Scheme, at Eagle Square, at the weekend, noted that continuous restriction of painted taxi to have access to these public places has given the illegal unpainted vehicle operators the opportunity to remain in business as people would prefer to use them into these places.
While commanding the minister for the launch of additional 180 cars for taxi in FCT in order to have better and conducive means of transport, he pointed out that, people patronize the illegal unpainted vehicles that are used as taxi due to the restrictions. He said, “I solicit that the Abuja Painted Taxis be allowed the opportunity to operate in the restricted areas. This will help to remove the illegal operators (unpainted vehicles) from the road. This will only take place when Abuja Painted Taxi takes commuters to their various destinations without restrictions. Illegal operators will have no business remaining in business as people will not use them.”
Senator Bala Mohammed had at the weekend launched the second phase of Abuja taxi scheme with 180 cars. This brings the total no to 340 cars so far.
